Mobile VoIP and Bandwidth Caps

AppId is over the quota

The mobile industry is in a state of flux right now in just about every respect. Whether it's the competition from VoIP or new trends with customers paying the full price for unlocked phones, no one knows which way the industry is going to settle. But one of the most disturbing trends and one which has huge ramifications is that of bandwidth caps. An anomaly in the days of increasing Internet usage across all devices, wireless bandwidth caps have the capacity to dramatically stifle innovation in new apps and as carriers are rolling out faster and faster networks, it seems ridiculous that caps are being imposed.

But it looks like they're here to stay in the medium term and applications which use the Internet exclusively such as VoIP need to learn how to deal with them and to measure their bandwidth usage before it gets out of hand. It's a well known fact that developers tend to ignore the Internet usage of applications unless they specifically pay attention to it.

Luckily for VoIP, the basic technology was designed when Internet speeds were very slow and dial up was the norm. When it comes down to it, VoIP can be very miserly with bandwidth. Compared to other applications such as streaming video or music, the data usage is almost negligible. For current VoIP applications to bypass the bandwidth caps by themselves, it will be a tall order.

But the effect of these caps are as much psychological as real. If people begin to start caring about how much Internet connections their phones use, there's a good chance that they'll shy away from using mobile VoIP even though it doesn't pose a threat to their data usage. And that's exactly what established telcos want since mobile VoIP cuts to the very heart of their business model and revenue stream.

Of course, even VoIP can eat up your bandwidth if it incorporates features such as HD voice and video calling. Feature bloat is a common enough characteristic of software development and Internet consumption tends to rise if not checked. Mobile apps need to do a good job in convincing customers that they don't use up too much bandwidth and VoIP companies need to take special note of this.

Whether or not the limits will increase or decrease as more and more people shift their usage patterns to smartphones is yet to be seen. We can only hope that the right decisions and regulations will prevent the crippling of one of the greatest technological revolutions of our time.
